VCAD’s BA (Hons) Business and Management for Creatives is designed to develop students' knowledge, skills and understanding of business and management within creative and wider professional contexts. Awarded by Arts University Plymouth, the course combines core business and management principles with opportunities to apply learning through creative, practical and live project-based activities. Students develop their ability to think creatively and critically, analyse complex real-world challenges, and evaluate and implement effective solutions across a range of creative industries and professional settings.
VCAD’s BA (Hons) Fashion Media and Marketing is a programme awarded by Arts University Plymouth, providing students with a foundation in creative practice, integrating theoretical, practical, and technical elements. The programme emphasizes reflection, creative thinking, and technical skills like visual communication and digital image-making. Students also engage with subject-specific methodologies, fostering critical thinking and interdisciplinary approaches. The programme’s specialisation and self-initiated projects encourage autonomy and creative authorship, preparing students for professional practice.
This one-year course, taught by VCAD & awarded by Arts University Plymouth, provides students with a practical introduction to business principles tailored for the creative industries. Students build a strong foundation in finance, legal frameworks, ethical practices, and resource management, while exploring how to reach audiences, build brand trust, and communicate value through creative thinking and digital tools.
VCAD is validated by two different awarding partners — Ravensbourne University London (RUL) for Business Management and Digital Marketing, and Arts University Plymouth (AUP) for Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Fashion Media and Marketing, and Business & Management for Creatives. So, its assessment rules and marking criteria differ by course. However, it is important to note some of its general guidelines:
Grading Scale
Honours classification bands are standard: First 70%+ · 2:1 60–69% · 2:2 50–59% · Third 40–49%.
Extensions and deferrals are two different things: An Extension (up to 5–10 working days) suits a temporary, short-term issue close to a deadline where you can still finish the work. A Deferral postpones the assessment entirely to the next opportunity, for more serious circumstances. Both use the same Extenuating Circumstances (EC) form, submitted via the Student Portal.
Apply for extensions before or shortly after the deadline: Extension requests must be made in advance of the deadline; Deferral/EC requests for missed deadlines must be submitted within 5 working days of the deadline or exam date.
AI tools are genuinely welcomed: VCAD explicitly supports using tools like Grammarly, spellcheckers, and even Generative AI (ChatGPT) for brainstorming, study questions, and summarising — provided use stays ethical, critically evaluated, and doesn't replace your own original work.
At VCAD, your coursework may bring together research, creative development and practical work. When you begin a new module, think about the assessment as a process rather than just a final submission:
Understand the brief: Identify the project requirements, learning outcomes, deadlines and assessment criteria.
Develop your ideas: Use research and experimentation to explore different approaches before settling on your final direction.
Build the outcome: Bring your research, concepts and technical skills together in the format required, whether that is a portfolio, creative project, presentation or written submission.
Review the finished work: Check that your final outcome responds to the brief and that any supporting research, development work or references are included.
These platforms and academic resources provided by the Victoria University of Arts and Design will enable you to study effectively and excel in your modules.
Moodle: VCAD's own dedicated Virtual Learning Environment — hosts course/module information, handbooks, learning resources, group work spaces, and assignment submission via Turnitin.
Turnitin: Used for submitting written assignments through Moodle, as part of academic integrity checks.
Microsoft 365 Pro: Free for all VCAD students - includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, and Outlook, tied to the student's VCAD email.
VLEBooks (Digital Library): VCAD's digital library service, accessed via Microsoft 365 login - books can be downloaded for a limited period or read online.
Extended Library Access: VCAD students may also access the digital libraries of their awarding university - Ravensbourne University London or Arts University Plymouth - with help from lecturers or the Academic Skills team.
A strong idea without enough development: Show how your concept evolved rather than presenting only the finished outcome.
Research that stays in the background: Connect your research and references to the creative decisions you make.
Style taking priority over purpose: A visually impressive outcome still needs to respond to the project brief.
Limited experimentation: Exploring different possibilities can demonstrate how you arrived at your final approach.
The process gets overlooked: Where required, document your testing, revisions, and decision-making alongside the finished work.
External work is not credited: Properly acknowledge images, ideas, references, and other creative material that influenced your project.
At Victoria College of Arts and Design, the finished piece is only part of the story. The research you undertake, ideas you explore, and decisions you make along the way can all contribute to the strength of your work. Give your creative process the attention it deserves, remain open to experimentation, and take the time to understand what each project is asking of you. A thoughtful process can give your final work greater purpose, clarity, and originality.
