Company Background

Virgin Group is a multinational company based in the United Kingdom and was founded in the year 1970. The company had included 40 companies across five sectors in five continents (Virgin, 2022). It was founded by Richard Branson (Virgin, 2022). They try to change the business for future development. The company has a revenue generation of 5.13 billion British pounds (Statista, 2022). It also has founded a non-profit organisation named Virgin Unite and a mobile application named Virgin Red (Virgin, 2022).

Virgin Ltd seems to have poor leadership in the organisation that affects their performance and the employees as well. This can be said because the Virgin Group employee engagement was noted to drop in the year 2021. In the year 2020, the engagement rate was 79% that dropped to 68% in 2021 this shows a higher drop due to lack of effective leadership in the organisation (Statista, 2022). In the context of Virgin Group, it can be stated that the company has been struggling for its survival in the market and it has disrupted the functionality of the organisation. This is due to the restriction by the government on travel due to the pandemic. As result, the company has faced a financial burden and to survive in the market they need monetary backup. It was seen that the organisation faced a loss of 211 million GBP with a performance of negative 0.1% (Trushyna, 2020). The company during the pandemic decided of cutting jobs. It has cut more than 3500 jobs out of 10000 employees at the beginning of 2020 (BBC, 2020). Shai Weiss who was appointed as the chief executive in the year 2019 cut costs along with half the staff in the organisation. He drained the Virgin’s cumbersome fleet of 747s and asked the investors for emergency money (Katz, 2021).
