Deviance and Race
Sociological construction on the basis of gender, race, and caste has always been the major concerns that have led to the emergence of severe terms and classifications of these parameters. The idea of people having different choices and desires is considered to be abnormal and sociologically bad context, which leads to conflicts not only among the races and genders but also leads to crimes in rage. Deviance is a result of that social acceptance, in the sociological context deviance is described as the actions and the behaviours that tend to violate and differ from particular social control norms such as social behaviour or adjustment from the acceptable moral standards (Humphrey and Schmalleger, 2019). Society is generally dedicated to following specific social norms and their minds have been bounded by them as they do not want to change them, and when someone is noticed to be violating those social control norms, they are considered as deviants. Social groups are observed to create deviance by introducing rules that constitute deviance, by implicating these rules to certain individuals and labelling them as outsiders. From this perspective, it is clear that deviance cannot be counted as a quality act that a person commits, rather a consequence of the forceful enactments and sanctions. Some of the deviant identities include homosexuality which is under the normal social norms considered as criminalized, however harmful practices for racism, discrimination, and sexual forceful acts were considered normal and had no legal acts against such activities, which led to rage among the people. Other than deviance, race is a major concern as well, Robert Knox stated that biological difference among races is realized as everlasting, but proved wrong in the future. This permanent variation leads to cultural differences; however, it is observed that some of the races are superior naturally and have good leadership compared to white ones.
Another one is “Race”, which refers to categorizing humankind based on distinctive physical traits, such as colour, physical abilities, etc. The sociology of ethnicity and race depicts the study of economic, social, and political relations among ethnicities and races to all levels of society. It is observed that identities are given on the basis of social control norms that specified people of society have decided, and on the basis of social status. Due to this one loses their identity and faces criticism which fires the fits of anger and may follow the path of crime, this all is a consequence of social injustice norms (Mueller 2018). Miles states that there are no such things called races, it is just a mindset and belief that things like this exist, especially by a few social groups to dominate the minor people and exclude them. Racism follows a wide range of discrimination, including discrimination on the basis of religion as well which has led to wars and conflicts around the world. Deviance has relevancy with race, as people of a different colour (black) tend to be labelled as criminals as compared to white ones. Generally, minorities along with sexual identity, ethnic, racial identities, and physical masculinity and femininity have also relevancy with among race and deviance. There is a severe need of bringing social change in the society in the perspective of deviance, such as Attitude of people towards sexuality, not sexualizing and down looking women, mothers, and single mothers at the workplace, accepting specially-abled people, not normalizing bullying over caste, race, and other factors. Race and deviance and in the sociological context is an issue however they exist dramatically, all these lead to outrages. There is a severe need to understand that these all are just social terms that need to be eliminated with time as the world has moved forward and there is a lot in a person other than an individual’s skin colour, height, caste, sexuality, and gender.
