Diversity, equality, inclusion, and discrimination are important within health and social care, as they encapsulate the ethical approach, as well as legal accountability, to supporting individuals. Having an understanding of these terms means that care facilitates fair, respectful, and effective care for individuals. 

Diversity refers to recognising and valuing the individual traits that make people different, such as age, culture, gender, or beliefs. When working in care, diversifying the environment, care could come in the form of suitably considering dietary needs or religious requirements to ensure individuals feel acknowledged.

Equality means that people have fair, right, and appropriate opportunities and access to services such as care, considering their characteristics and backgrounds. When working in social care, you must be consistent and fair to each individual, regardless of their characteristics. For example, all residents should receive the same quality of care and support regardless of their backgrounds.

Inclusion is about creating environments in which all feel welcome, respected, and able to participate fully. For example, making adjustments to activities so that everyone with different abilities will be able to get involved encourages inclusion and promotes belonging. 

Discrimination is unfair treatment of a person because of their characteristics, which include, among others, race, gender, disability, religion, etc. Discrimination may be direct, indirect, or arise via harassment. Discrimination in care violates trust and can breach legal duties, such as refusing to provide service due to a person's sexual orientation. 

Supporting diversity, equality, and inclusion whilst actively challenging discrimination is critical to person-centred, respectful, and legally compliant care.
