PLP22203 Professional Life Practice: Developing a Career in Product and UX Design

Industry Mapping and Personal Career Map

My career has majorly consisted of working in the logistics sector, which involves warehouse management and a focus on picking and packing. I have gained significant experience in this field by working at Amazon Fulfilment Centre and John Lewis and Partners Warehouse. Working here helped me develop strong organisational skills, attention to detail and time management skills, which are mandatory for working in a large-scale supply chain environment. I further realised that these skills are relevant in many other fields, especially in design-related fields such as product design, UI/UX design and branding. My experience in the logistics sector has also taught me that in any industry, process optimisation and efficiency are crucial for the proper functioning of the industry. In warehouses, the workflows of various processes are designed to ensure a streamlined process, minimise delays and improve productivity for best results. Every stage requires careful planning and execution, right from taking goods from storage to delivery. I observed a similar requirement in the design field, especially in UI/UX and product design. In this field, the processes should be systematic and user-centred so that effective designs that align with user requirements are created. In product design, right from developing the concept to final manufacturing of the product, everything requires intense planning. The final product needs to match the user requirements and at the same time, the costs of manufacturing and time required should be minimal. UI/UX design also requires a properly structured workflow and space for improvement as per the client's requirement, just like how a structured flow is expected in warehouses. I have been actively learning design methodologies so that I can apply them in business strategy and innovate new processes. I plan to transition my career into design so that I can combine efficiency, creativity and user-based solutions. I believe that my experience in logistics will play a key role in helping me understand the design process due to the similarities in the processes.

Industry Events, workshops and Tutorial Activities

To adapt to the British Design Industry, I have shown interest in the multiple London-based design events where I was able to meet and interact with multiple design enthusiasts. These events inspired me, helped me gain valuable insights and helped me network with people in the industry. These experiences have deepened my understanding of the design field and reinstated my interest in working in product design and UI/UX design.

One of the major events I attended was the London Design Festival 2023 where I witnessed the celebration of innovation and creativity in the design field (londondesignfestival.com, 2025). This event highlighted various innovative designs that could transform an industry, the power of design thinking and its impact on various industries. I observed the various steps involved in product development and branding and also witnessed the promotion of sustainability. I was fortunate enough to attend talks with lead designers and industry experts who had multiple years of experience in the design industry and they heavily emphasized the need for sustainability and user-centred designs in the current design industry. A particular event highlighted the importance of using eco-friendly materials for design got me thinking on ideas that will help in making the future sustainable. I realised that this initiative is also important in supply chain management and product development.

Furthermore, I attended the UX London Conference where I explored the concept of user experience design (UX). I learnt through multiple discussions the importance of user experience and user-centred designs (2024.uxlondon.com, 2024). In the Innocent project, we curated our ideas by taking inspiration from the UX London Conference and developed ideas that will improve the workflow of processes within the campus. Both ideas were user-centred and aimed to reduce the time required for multiple processes by streamlining them in a structured form. The importance of user satisfaction through innovative UX designs demonstrates the effectiveness of the designs.

Importance of Networking in Career Development

To transition into the design industry, one needs to have a structured plan and a robust strategy. I recognised the necessary skills required in product design and UI/UX and have been developing them to close the gap between my logistics background and my goals in the design sector. An important part of this transition is learning the use of digital tools and software used in the design process. I started with learning industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite for graphic design, Figma for UI/UX design and AutoCAD and SolidWorks for product design. This software has wide use in the industry and will help me create innovative and creative designs which will be functional and feasible (COZMA-IVAN, 2022, p. 39).

Other than technical skills, an understanding of design thinking and problem-solving methodologies is also important to thrive in the design field (bbc.co.uk, 2025). Design nowadays is majorly about solving problems creatively and developing user-centred solutions, especially in process optimization. Since I do not possess the instinct for this, I am following IDEO's human-centred design approach. This approach has three stages, inspiration, ideation and implementation (Liu et al., 2022, p. 2). This approach helped me create solutions that are both functional and creative and helped me gain confidence in designing.

Along with technical skills and design thinking, networking and soft skills also play an important role in building a career and growing the design industry (Hirschi and Koen, 2021, p. 6). My previous experiences in warehouse management helped me gain teamwork and leadership skills but I still need to develop my other skills. These skills include the ability to pitch ideas, communicate design concepts and interact with clients. To learn these skills, I have been actively participating in design meetups in London, connecting with design professionals through LinkedIn and taking public speaking courses to improve confidence. By improving my communication and confidence in presenting myself and my ideas, I can try for opportunities in client-facing roles and collaborative projects.

Ideal Work-Based Learning Opportunity

My ultimate goal involves securing a full-time role in Product Design or UI/UX design within the next two years. To achieve this ambitious goal, I have made a structured plan which includes my short-term, mid-term and long-term goals. These goals will ensure that I keep learning, developing my skills and networking professionally with individuals in the design industry. This approach will help me transition smoothly from the logistics sector to the design industry and build a strong foundation for my career growth.

In the short term (0-6 months), my primary focus will be on acquiring technical knowledge and practical experience that is mandatory in the design field. I am currently working towards getting my Google UX Design Certificate which is known to provide hands-on experience in user research, wireframing, prototyping and usability testing. I aim to work on and complete at least three portfolio projects which will display my problem-solving abilities through my designs to potential employers. I will keep attending design events where I will learn more about the design processes used in different projects and also network with more individuals to collaborate with. These events will also help me gain new insights into recent design trends and learn more about new design processes.

In the mid-term (6-12 months), I aim to apply the skills that I have learnt in the real world and test my efficiency by working on real-life scenarios. I will get an internship in the design sector or work on freelance projects that will test my practical skills and help me gain experience and improve my design thinking. Furthermore, I aim to gain mentorship from experienced professionals in the design sector who will guide me in developing my portfolio, and career and teach me industry practices. I will also improve my LinkedIn profile and enhance it to build more connections online and establish credibility.

My long-term (1-2 years) goal is to secure a full-time job in product design or UI/UX design within the UK and apply my experience and skills in the industry. Furthermore, I aim to work on multiple industry projects and gain professional experience. I will use my leadership skills and gain promotions and lead design teams.

Professional Development

During my journey in this module, I have realised that career transitions are not easy and require persistence along with a high level of adaptability and a commitment towards continuous learning. I had the opportunity to research various industries and then develop a career map based on an industry and follow the same. This module helped me develop my CV, a cover letter and a social media profile on LinkedIn. I was inspired to attend various design events to understand the industry and learn more about the processes that happen in it. This module helped me understand the importance of structured planning and the benefits of following the same. I started building my skills in this module to adapt to the design industry and find employment in the same. This reflective process has enabled me to continuously grow, learn new things in different fields, network with people and learn about their experiences.
