PLP22106 – Professional Life Practice: Exploring Your Practice

Introduction

This portfolio reflects my involvement in the EcoShine London project, where I am working to build a sustainable cleaning company that offers residential and commercial cleaning services across London. While working on this project, I learned several important job skills that will be helpful in my future endeavours. This reflection is on the 4 professional objectives.

Goal 1: Developing Leadership Skills

One of the biggest career objectives I gained from the EcoShine London project was the growth of my leadership abilities. Leadership is a necessary component of a business, as it entails motivating team members, managing responsibilities, problem-solving, and leading a team toward a shared objective (ANANYI and OLOLUBE, 2023). I chose this goal because I knew that to be a good leader, both in my career and in my personal life, would be a key factor in my future employment prospects within the business world.

Leadership was illustrated through planning activities, coordinating tasks and making sure that project deadlines were met during the EcoShine project. While we had specific roles, the project was only a success when everyone in our group took responsibility and did their part to achieve our goal. I was very involved in the project, sharing ideas, helping where needed, and discussing. This experience taught me that leadership isn't just about telling people what to do; it's about involving people in a group and helping them work well. A difficult aspect of our project was the fact that we had to deal with conflicting opinions on business strategies and priorities. For instance, there were differences of opinion within the team regarding the methods of marketing, the sustainability targets, and pricing strategies. These differences sometimes delayed decision-making and posed uncertainty in the group. But with open communication and a shared goal of making a successful eco-friendly business, we were able to overcome these (Kulkarni, Valeri and William, 2025). Working with the team, this experience has given me an understanding of the need to be active in listening, patient, and in conflict resolution.

This experience was in particular relevant to the Theory of Constraints (TOC) developed by. The theory is that there are constraints on the performance and progress of every project. Our obstacles in the form of constraints were scheduling problems and communication delays, which impacted productivity. These issues were identified and addressed early, and coordination amongst team members was enhanced to minimise their impact and move forward towards our goals. This showed an example of leadership in identifying issues and putting solutions in place to enhance team performance.

The project also helped me to build my confidence in decision-making and communication. In the interview, I had to explain my thoughts and provide evidence for my ideas when talking about EcoShine's sustainability goals and business development strategy (Batra, 2024). This enhanced my professional communication and impact on group decision-making skills. Besides, having an opportunity to go to the presentation helped me more in getting confident while speaking and expressing my views in front of others. Looking back on this experience, I feel that my leadership skills have been developed a lot during the course of this project. Gaining increased confidence in taking initiative, helping others, and participating in problem-solving.

Goal 2: Improved Collaboration Skills

An important professional objective that I learned during the EcoShine London project was the ability to work effectively as a team. Teamwork and cooperation are a key part of working at the centre since many of the business operations need people to work together to achieve a common goal. This goal was chosen as I was looking to improve my teamwork skills, communication and career skills in a professional setting and how I could positively contribute to a team (Bergentoft and Ehn, 2025). I am keen to develop these skills in my future career, as many employers are placing emphasis on the importance of working in a team and collaborating with employees from various backgrounds and expertise.

This is due to the fact that it was a very team-based project, as the different groups would have to work independently on different aspects of the business. The roles included: market research, finance, sustainability, operations, marketing and project coordination. Responsibilities were distributed, but the project was a success when everyone cooperated and shared information. For instance, market research was conducted to determine financial projections, and the sustainability goals shaped the marketing strategies and operational planning. This highlighted the interdependencies and need for collaboration amongst the various business functions to be successful.

One of the project life cycle’s key learning points for me was the critical role of communication in ensuring that the team works effectively together. Team members were able to share progress, discuss challenges, and give feedback in regular discussions. I enjoyed attending the meetings and heard many different ideas, which helped me to understand how important it is to communicate effectively to help make things work (Luhende, 2022). I also found that teamwork, mutual respect, and trust are necessary, and each entity will be a key factor in meeting project goals.

A challenge that our team encountered was the different schedules and commitments of people. Others had work and personal commitments, which made it difficult to find appropriate meeting times. This sometimes slowed down the process and led to communication problems. We did this by keeping in regular touch via the internet and informing everyone through group discussions. This meant all were kept up-to-date, and there was no confusion about roles. I learned from this experience that flexibility and adaptability are needed in teamwork. The EcoShine project also helped me to be more open to and to give constructive feedback. In the discussions, team members frequently offered suggestions for improving ideas and plans. I had initially found it difficult to take criticism, but eventually understood that useful feedback helps to enhance the quality of work and would be beneficial for personal development. Similarly, I was taught how to give constructive feedback professionally and constructively. This experience is directly in relation to the module learning outcome relating to working collaboratively to create meaningful content. In this collaboration, our team was able to produce a complete business plan and presentation that covered market opportunities, sustainability concerns, financial planning, and more (Tiippana, 2025).

Goal 3: Storytelling and Influencing Audiences

One major role learning objective I established for myself during the EcoShine London project was the enhancement of my storytelling and influencing skills with the audience (McIlroy et al., 2024). One of the most important business skills is the ability to communicate effectively since organisations have to convince customers, investors, staff, and stakeholders of their ideas and objectives. The goal I chose to spend time on was to become more confident in giving information and to be more effective and interesting in presenting information in a convincing way.

The challenge of the EcoShine project was that it didn't just get the facts and figures out there; it needed to tell a story about the business. We were looking to articulate the significance of eco-friendly cleaning services and how EcoShine might offer a solution to environmental and health issues arising from the use of conventional cleaning products. This needed us to create an emotional bond with our audience, but also provide valid facts and data to back up our business proposal.

States that storytelling is an effective method of communication because people prefer to remember information through a story or narrative rather than just facts (Utaminingsih and Fajrie, 2022). As part of the project, we created a story on the harmful impacts of chemical cleaning supplies on both human health and the environment. We then explained that the biodegradable, non-toxic and cruelty-free products that EcoShine uses would create a safer and more sustainable choice. This enabled us to have a clear and memorable message for our audience.

The presentation also demanded our persuading our audience that not only was EcoShine not damaging the environment, it was also good business. We did this by combining market research, sustainability goals and financial projections into a readable, coherent story. For instance, we gave the rumours of the UK cleaning industry being valued at around £55 billion and that, as people want more sustainable servicing, there is a high opportunity for the success of EcoShine. When we showed these facts to them together with our sustainability mission, it enhanced the credibility of our business proposal.

I had one problem with myself: when I am in front of an audience, I speak with less confidence. My first day was the day I was supposed to present, and I was a bit nervous and concerned about getting it wrong (Chan and Little, 2024). Through preparation and practice, however, I was able to feel more at ease with the delivery of information and the communication of my ideas. It gave me a great chance to work on my public speaking skills and boost my confidence when speaking to others. One of the principles shared in Made to Stick was especially relevant to this goal. The principles discussed in Made to Stick were particularly relevant to this goal.

Goal 4: Developing a Positive Financial Mindset

Financial awareness is crucial in the business context because every business or organisation has to make choices about various matters such as budgeting, investment, income generation, and sustainability. This goal was chosen as I wanted to gain more knowledge about financial planning and become more confident in analysing business performance (Juma and Osoro, 2025). Before the project, I had minimal experience in interpreting financial information, but I had opportunities to expand my knowledge on this aspect of the project, working on EcoShine.

One of the main challenges in the project was the financial feasibility study of the EcoShine business model. We discussed the company's start-up expenses, revenue projections, profitability goals, and growth plans as a group. This enabled me to gain insight into the role of financial planning in the success of the business and how it helps the organisation achieve their goals. The project highlighted how financial decisions impact each aspect of a business, including operations, marketing, staffing and sustainability efforts.

EcoShine's predicted financial returns were favourable, especially in the first 3 years of the project. It cost £75,000 to start the business and fund the equipment, eco-friendly cleaning products, marketing, technology systems and running costs. The business was expected to grow in London and the Home Counties with a major increase in revenue.

The calculations (See Appendix) show that Eco Shine will grow significantly in a relatively short time. The revenue is expected to grow by £515,000 from Year 1 to Year 3, which is around a 198.08% increase. Furthermore, a projected Year 3 net profit of £167,000 gives rise to a profit margin of 21.55%, which is the percentage of profit in relation to the total turnover, which shows that the business will be profitable and sustainable. This analysis of these numbers enabled me to gain an understanding of how financial forecasting aids in decision-making and business planning. Having a positive financial mindset means thinking about money as a means of achieving long-term financial goals, instead of just short-term gains. The idea was apparent throughout the whole of the Eco Shine project, as the firm's overarching goal is to achieve a balance between profitability and environmental care. Despite financial growth, EcoShine will continue to pay fair wages, earn sustainability certifications and give back to environmental causes by donating a portion of profits. This proved that financial success could be achieved alongside the generation of social value by businesses (SAFUAN et al., 2024).

Conclusion

The EcoShine London project was a valuable opportunity to build on a range of relevant professional skills such as leadership, collaboration, storytelling and financial awareness. In the process of doing and contemplating, I enhanced my confidence, communication, teamwork and decision-making skills. These skills will assist with my future career progression and enable me to contribute to business workplaces effectively.
