1.5 An assessment of my Research Skills (using Research Skills Profile to support this) and an outline of how I plan to reinforce areas where your profile identifies gaps to improve my research skills
Using the Research Skills Profile, evaluate your research skills
Students, professionals, and academics all need to have strong research skills. It entails gathering, assessing, analysing, and synthesising data from several sources in order to provide a response or identify a solution. Using six criteria—problem conceptualization, literature review, study design, data collection, data analysis, and communication—the Research Skills Profile evaluates a person's research abilities. The Research Skills Profile has been used to evaluate my research abilities.
I understand the research issue quite well; however, I should do a better job of defining the goals and hypotheses of the study.
- Review of the Literature: I am well-versed in the literature that is pertinent to my research subject. So I need to broaden my search to incorporate more varied sources.
- Research Design: I understand the study methodology and design well, but I could do a better job of choosing the right research methodologies and sample strategies.
- Data collection: I have expertise in using secondary sources, interviews, and questionnaires to collect data. But I need to do a better job of creating data-gathering tools and guaranteeing data quality.
- Data analysis: I've used statistical software before, but I could do a better job of choosing the right statistical tests and analysing the findings.
- Communication: I have previous experience giving both written and spoken presentations of study findings. Making study findings more understandable to a larger audience is something I could do better, though.
Strengthening Areas with Known Gaps to Boost Research Capabilities
I intend to take them to fill in the holes my research skills profile reveals.
the subsequent steps:
- Issue Definition: I will talk with my supervisor, go to research methods seminars, and read pertinent literature to determine my research's goals and hypotheses.
- Literature Review: I will use databases and search engines in addition to my normal sources, go to research seminars, and connect with other scholars in order to broaden my search to include more diversified sources.
- Research Design: I will speak with my supervisor, go to research methodology seminars, and read pertinent literature in order to choose the best research methodologies and sample procedures.
- Data collecting: I will pilot test data gathering methods, ask colleagues for input, and adhere to established standards for data quality in order to improve data collection tools and guarantee data quality.
- Data Analysis: To choose the best statistical tests and analyse the results, I will speak with a statistician, go to workshops on data analysis, and study pertinent literature.
- Communication: I will attend science communication seminars, utilise straightforward language in my presentations and publications, and solicit input from non-experts to make research findings more approachable to a larger audience.
I am certain that I can strengthen the areas where my research skills profile indicates deficiencies and hone my research abilities.
