1) A summary of your work experience.

After completing my vocational studies I worked at a retail outlet of XYZ supermarket in the UK. My role in the organisation was as a warehouse worker. The function of the position entailed keeping an inventory of the numerous products that were stored in the warehouse, making a list of the products that are to be delivered to the outlets, and organising delivery trips to those places. I had to keep a very thorough checklist of the products that were stored. As such, I categorised them based on their usage, which was nutrition, hygiene, personal care, clothing wear, and home appliances. Another facet of my work was delivering these stored items to the outlets which ran out of stock or restocking the warehouse with goods from suppliers. This included loading the goods into the transport vehicle, cross-checking the loaded goods with the checklist, checking on the condition of the delivery vehicle, and selecting the best route of delivery considering traffic and weather conditions.

2) A consideration of how that experience has advanced your skills and knowledge.

Taking inventory of the products required a very minute attention to detail. I had to recheck every shelf and corner of the workhouse to confirm whether I missed anything. This has affected my everyday mindset, as I am now much more patient and attentive in my day-to-day activities. Also, this work has given me a better knowledge of how the logistics of a supermarket retail outlet work.  For this profession, success depends on attention to many details: Routes need to be determined based on expediency, understanding of environments, and avoiding obstacles ranging from road repairs to wars and adverse weather conditions. Shipping providers and packaging must also be considered as it affects the condition of the items during movement. I have come to know the roles of the various background workers who work day and night to ensure that the shelves of the shops are never empty for the customers. This job also taught me the importance of teamwork, and inventory management, and introduced me to technology related to warehouse logistics.

3) A summary of how that relates to the course of study that you have applied for.

Of the courses offered by Bath Spa University, the one that mostly relates to my job profile would be Business and Management and Marketing Communication (Bath Spa University, 2022). Therefore, I have decided to choose that course because from what I know, my work was related to the logistics aspect of business operations. Logistics can be considered a very important function for any business, especially retail. Logistics is the culmination of various processes that encompasses the movement of goods from the manufacturing unit to the hands of the buyer. In the retail business successful logistics leads to lower costs, higher production rates, better control of inventory, efficient use of warehouse space, and improved customer and supplier experience. It has also taught me the basics of supply chain management. This is how my work relates to the course that I have applied for.
