C. It never occurs in a predictable pattern.
D. It is a series of rapid changes in an ecosystem.

Answer: B. It occurs after a disturbance

Ecological succession best describes what happens to an ecosystem following a disturbance. Succession is a series of predictable changes in species composition and structure of an ecological community through time. It may start by either a natural event (e.g. hurricane, flood, forest fire), or human interaction with the ecosystem (e.g. logging, plowing). After the disturbance, the area is first colonized by a community of pioneer species that facilitate colonization by species that are more complex. Thus, the area is gradually returned to (or returns to) an organized stable climax community. Succession is not strictly caused by human, nor is it always a rapid or unpredictable set of changes. Succession has a systematic, directional path toward stability (i.e. ecosystem stability).
