Ensuring that colleagues or supervisors know your location is crucial for safety, efficiency, and overall security. In safe or care settings, this awareness is beneficial but is often crucial for preventing hazards and being able to respond rapidly if emergencies happen.

This practice is primarily about safety. Safety in situations of emergency, accidents, or health issues. If you know where someone is, you can respond to an emergency, accident, or health issue quickly and efficiently, potentially reducing the impact or saving a life. If a person is lost or is having a health emergency, if we know where they are, we can respond quickly.

The second reason for following this practice is to support communication and coordination of care. Staff may be where they are supposed to be, but knowing where your colleagues are means that one can assist to get care implemented, you are aware of where someone else is, and you can maintain care as consistently as possible, particularly when staff are changing positions or they are working with someone vulnerable.

Lastly, it reinforces accountability. Reporting where you are indicates to supervisors that you are fulfilling your responsibilities, that you are not taking breaks or absences that have not been sanctioned, and that you are holding to a professional standard. Being open and transparent is trust, and this fosters a caring, accountable, and responsible culture for people.

Being aware of where staff are at, and therefore can better manage workloads, tasks, and responsibilities. Supervisors can allocate staff and resources appropriately and be able to manage changes in client/resident needs systematically.

Most importantly, it assures colleagues, staff, families, and service users that everyone is safe and they know where every person is if they need them.

To sum it up, sharing your whereabouts is a primary strategy for facilitating a safe, efficient, and trustworthy care environment – and supports a quicker emergency response, improved communication, and continued quality care.
